Memphis HSCC is a computer instructional program available to local area students in grades 8 through 12. The
Memphis Chapter of BDPA proudly sponsors this annual program through National
BDPA's HSCC (High School Computer Competition) initiative. Participating students receive quality instruction in basic computer skills,
computer programming, website development, public speaking, and career development. Through BDPA members, volunteers, parents,
and corporate sponsorship, students are educated in a broad and proven curriculum that's given to thousands of high school students annually
from many BDPA Chapters across the nation.
This year (2005), the Memphis HSCC program provides several different instructional tracks to benefit the development of both new and
returning students. New students are urged to enroll in the program's entry level track which begins in February. This ten week track provides
instructional focus on basic computer skills and website design. The intermediate track that runs from April to August is available to both
new and returning students. Students in the intermediate track learn advanced website design, web programming, and career development skills.
In the advanced track, the program's top students are selected to participate in either the National HSCC Competition or the National BDPA
Youth Conference that will be held in Detroit, MI.
Memphis HSCC & BDPA's National HSCC program has a rich tradition of Closing the Gap in Information Technology. The program was established
in 1986 by Dr Jesse Bemley of Washington DC as a two team computer competition event at BDPA's national conference. Now, the program has
grown into an national educational program that concludes with the National HSCC Competition having 30+ teams competing. In 2005, the first
place prize for each student winning the competition is the Dr. Jesse Bemley Scholarship valued at $2,500.
