The National HSCC (High School Computer Competition) program was founded in 1986 by Dr. Jesse Bemley of Washington DC.
As National BDPA's Education Chairperson, Dr. Bemley's vision was to establish the HSCC program in order to address the
growing disparity among minority students with little or no computer literacy skills. The key benefit of this initiative, as realized by Bemley,
would prevent individuals lacking these skills from being left without employment opportunities in the future workplace.
In 1986, the first HSCC Competition was held at the BDPA National Conference in Atlanta.
It started out as a two team competition between students from the Washington DC and Atlanta Chapters of BDPA.
During the following year (June 1987), the computer competition became an annual event and
was voted to become a "National Initiative" by BPDA's National Board of Directors. Today, the program has grown
into a national educational program that concludes with the National HSCC Competition having more than 30 teams competing.
